Members of the Mandurah public are encouraged to report shady fishing behavior. FishWatch is a 24/7 hotline for quickly and easily reporting sightings and suspicions of illegal fishing activity, as well as reports of aquatic pests and diseases, including fish kills . Illegal fishing can include someone casting a net in the river, exceeding their catch or possession limits or catching small fish, fishing in a closed area, having more fishing gear in the water than ‘he shouldn’t, or sells or attempts to sell recreational fish. In July of this year, a member of the public reported to FishWatch a fishing net left unattended in the Vasse Wonnerup wetlands containing large numbers of fish. Fishery officers went there and removed the illegal net. Their subsequent inspections and investigations led them to someone who has since assisted them with their investigations. In the southern state, Operation Shadowedge began in May this year with resources allocated to strategically focus on illegal commercial and recreational fishing activities. Public reporting and support via FishWatch greatly helps this operation. Reports made via FishWatch are treated in the strictest of confidence.
